Born in 1972, Martin Welzel received his first musical training in Bremen (Germany). Later, he studied with Daniel Roth and Wolfgang Rubsam at the University of Music in Saarbruecken. He holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in organ performance from the University of Washington in Seattle (USA), where he studied with Dr. Carole Terry and wrote a dissertation on Jeanne Demessieux.

His engagements have included organ concerts in Germany, United Kingdom (St. Paul’s Cathedral, Westminster Abbey, and Westminster Cathedral in London), France (Notre-Dame Cathedral, La Madeleine, and St. Sulpice in Paris), Finland (Helsinki Organ Summer, Pori Organ Festival), Netherlands (St. Laurenskerk in Rotterdam), and the United States (Washington National Cathedral, Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Stanford University, St. Mary’s Cathedral in San Francisco, St. Mark’s Cathedral in Seattle). In addition to his performance activities, he taught at the University of Music in Saarbruecken and at Ludwig Maximilian University in Munich (Germany).

In 2004, Martin Welzel and Alexandra Kertz-Welzel formed the Emerald City Duo, exploring the repertoire of the 19th and 20th century for organ and piano (www.emeraldcityduo.com). He has recorded three CDs for Naxos with organ music by Max Reger at Trier Cathedral (www.martinwelzel.com).
