Matti Vaakanainen has graduated from the Kuopio department of Sibelius Academy in 2007 with a master’s degree in Church Music and from the Helsinki department of Sibelius Academy in 2011 with a master’s degree in Performing Musical Arts. His studies of playing the organ have been instructed by Tuula Rönkä, Jaana Ikonen, and Professor Kari Jussila, and he has studied playing the harpsichord with Assi Karttunen as his teacher. In the fall of 2010, Vaakanainen completed the Level A performance examination (formerly: Diploma) in the organ, and he continued with completing the Level B performance examination in the harpsichord in the spring of 2011. Vaakanainen has complemented his studies with numerous organ masterclasses as well as with private classes taught by Louis Robilliard (in Lyon), by Christophe Mantoux (in Paris) and by Michel Bouvard (in Toulouse). In addition to his work as the organist of the Old church in Helsinki, Vaakanainen gives concerts regularly and attends Uniarts Helsinki Sibelius Academy doing his post-graduate studies in Arts Study Programme at Doc-Mus doctorate school, aiming at a doctorate degree in music.

From 2009 until 2018, Vaakanainen served as a board member in the Organum Society, as well as a columnist in the paper published by the Organum Society.
